I started my teaching career teaching at Chico State, where I tought World Literature and Intro to Literature. This semester (Spring '18) begins my 9th year teaching at the college level. Over that time, I've taught a wide range of courses including ENGL 2, ENGL 119, ENGL 4, and ENGL 11 at Butte College as well as 9 different ESL courses at Chico State, where I've also taught ENGL 130 (the transfer equivalent for ENGL 2 here at Butte) in addition to the aforementioned literature courses.
I approach teaching in the same way I hope my students approach learning: with empathy, humility, patience, and energy. I'm not big on tests, but I am big on reading, writing, and thinking as processes that are incomparably fruitful with the appropriate time, environment, and attitude given to each. I am very personable and accessible, and I approach my student relationships with compassion and equity. I really enjoy teaching, and I enjoy giving my students a chance to enjoy learning.
My courses at Butte generally involve close attention to rhetoric -- both as a reader and a writer -- in the context of social issues that you care about. Students are encouraged to choose their own topics of interest for final projects; however, earlier supporting course material generally centers on one of the following themes: happiness, cooperation, ethics, identities, and pop media.
